REINFORCED RAFT FOUNDATIONS
As with all foundations, reinforced raft foundations are designed and specified by a structural engineer based upon the prevailing ground conditions and the nature of the building being constructed.
A reinforced raft foundation is a reinforced concrete slab under the whole of a building or extension, ‘floating’ on the ground as a raft floats on water. This type of foundation spreads the load of the building over a larger area than other foundations, lowering the pressure on the ground.
They vary in thickness, usually from a minimum of 200mm upwards depending on the loads required and the ground conditions. They are reinforced with steel mesh and or steel reinforcing bar. High strength concrete is then poured and the desired level of finish is applied. The damp proof membrane is incorporated into the slab and depending on the requirements, insulation can be placed underneath, or on top of the slab after construction.
